6/5/2023 0 Comments Magpie murders books in orderWhen Susan reaches the end of her copy of Conway’s manuscript, she realizes the last chapter which traditionally contains the scene where the detective gathers all the suspects, eliminates them one by one, and announces who is the culprit is missing. As Atticus begins his questioning and S herlock Holmes -style investigation, another murder occurs along with burglary of expensive jewelry and as they say, the plot thickens. Like all of Conway’s mysteries, i t’s set in a lovely English village shortly after WWII and is cluttered with more than half a dozen characters/suspects. Nevertheless, Susan plows ahead and begins reading Magpie M urders, the book within Horowitz’s book. The police consider it a suicide, supported by a note and the fa c t he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. After he submits his latest Atticus Pund detective novel for Susan to edit, Conway is found dead at the foot of the tower at the ornate country manor house where he lived. Susan Ryeland is an editor of a London publishing house whose best source of profit is the mystery writer Alan Conway. Anthony Horowitz’s Magpie Murders (Harper Collins, $27.99) is perhaps the cleverest mystery I’ve ever read.
